Speedboats are indeed the fastest, but also the loudest and often uncomfortable Water Transportation. The view of the landscape is also often very limited, so that speed boat tours to more rapid achievement of the goal, as suitable for exploring archipelagos.
For longer distances they are indispensable (z.b. Trips to the Similan Islands), with shorter tours (Trips to James Bond Iceland) you should avoid it.
